Light vs. Darkness: Legend

Tonight covers yet another fantasy film from the 80's. This is one of my favorites. Legend is about the aspect of what our universe is with light and darkness. What if the sun never rose again? After you watch this film, sunlight may not be taken for granted.

Once upon a time, the Lord of Darkness is scheming to take over the world with his darkness. But there is one creature that stands in his way: Unicorns. That's right, the light of the world depends on these creatures of light and purity. In the woods, a boy named Jack and Princess Lily go to see the unicorns. Princess Lily is a little, if not very, naive. When she goes out to touch one, it sets up the perfect trap and enables a goblin
sent by Darkness to shoot it with a poison dart. The unicorn dies, and the world is plunged into darkness and winter. Now it's up to Jack and the other magical beings of the forest to protect the other unicorn and defeat Darkness.

Legend is a film that creatively blends together different mythical creatures, along with some new ones like Darkness himself. My favorite characters? Gump and his companions. Gump looks sort of like a little boy when he in fact acts like a leader to the forest and has much knowledge. As we can see, it's Gump's job to care for all the forest. For when he finds that Jack is somewhat responsible for what has happened, he offers Jack a riddle. If Jack succeeds, he will be forgiven for what he has done. If not, he shall die. Luckily, Jack is able to solve the riddle, and is thus dubbed, "dancing fool and Faerie friend."

The costumes in this film were very impressive. The scene I think of when I say this is when Lily is confronted by a magical dress conjured up by Darkness in order to seduce her. As weird as it sounds, Lily and the dress actually dance together and the dress becomes one with Lily and is now worn by her. This basically represents the dark temptations that can lead us to evil, as well as the film's theme for light's clash with darkness.
Good costumes need good makeup. Darkness undeniably has the most makeup and costume of anyone in the film. All of these as well as a few voice effects combine with the great acting of Tim Curry to make for a splendid performance.

A word concerning Oona: Oona is the little fairy that joins Jack and the others on their quest. She naturally has great magical abilities and "can be anything you want her to be. Even your heart's desire." Oona is very attracted to Jack and applies this later when the group is trapped in a dungeon. In return for retrieving the key, Oona asks Jack for a kiss. But Jack is reluctant because he loves Lily. Oona changes her appearance to look like Lily but Jack's feelings are not fooled by the illusion. She becomes angry with Jack but still helps them escape. After that we don't really get anymore of Oona's character. Apart from her affection to Jack, Oona doesn't show a distinct personality. What's your opinion of Oona?
