Once upon a time, a young Severus Snape meets Lily Evans as a child. Growing up together, Snape's heart is almost broken at the fact that Lily married James Potter, who had in fact bullied him at school. Snape's heart is hurt even more when Lily is murdered by the Dark Lord. Years later, Lily's orphaned son Harry Potter comes to Hogwarts. Snape acts hateful toward Harry nearly all his years of teaching him. In truth, Snape cares for Harry because of his love for Lily. The problem? The mere sight of Harry reminds Snape of James.
We see little of Snape's past throughout the Harry Potter series. This allows for us to get to know Snape. After things we've seen him do, we gladly think he's a bad guy. Most of him isn't revealed till the last part of the series: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. After we know, our hatred for Snape melts away into pity, showing us that people definately aren't what they seem and shouldn't be judged unless their full story is known.
Snape never got to live with the one he loved. Lily chose another, but his love never faded. As far as we know, Snape has never come to love anyone like he did Lily. It's the only reason that he cared for her only son at all. Snape acted the way he did to hide his love for Lily from Harry and to take out how much he was hurting- how much pain and hate there was in his heart.
