Rumplestiltskin: Man or Beast?

             Depending on the realm or the person, he is known by a few names. Rumpelstiltskin, the Dark One, or simply Mr. Gold. A man with great power who can be unpredictable.Things such as cowardice, power, and revenge have made him the person he is now. As the #1 deal-maker in the Fairy-Tale world, he always warns us the following: 

             Once upon a time, Rumpelstiltskin was an ordinary man with one priority: the care of his son, Baelfire. His home was at war, and wishing to keep his son from going into battle, he stole the dagger of the Dark One. The dagger holds all of the Dark One's will and power. He who has the dagger controls him. Rumpelstiltskin killed the Dark One, thus taking his place. But the power was something he never knew before. He becomes as addicted to the power as I am to Dr. Pepper. This leads Rumpelstiltskin to lose Baelfire to another realm. 

              Due to the queen's curse, Rumpelstiltskin becomes Mr. Gold, a pawnshop owner. In our world he is just as untrustworthy and power driven as he was in the Enchanted Forest. Despite this, Rumpelstiltskin may be one of the most likable characters on ABC's Once Upon A Time. But here's the question: Is he a man, or just an evil beast of a sorcerer?  

              We know that Rumpelstiltskin has the ability to love. He loves his wife Belle and his son more than anything. Both have tried to help him let go of his power. Unfortunately, he also loves his power just as much. At different points he loses and gains their trust repeatedly. After all, he has done some evil deeds, such as murdering a few times and working against our heroes. 

              Depending on the intentions, Rumpelstiltskin could side with you or the enemy. He does nothing unless it benefits him. Does this make him evil? Yes and no. It doesn't necessarily make him good either. It does, however, make him appear selfish or cowardly. 

              Rumpelstiltskin has done some good things too. He turned away from killing his grandson, helped the heroes, and has sacrificed himself. Those things show the man he can be. Yet the temptation of his power always seems to return and bring back the beast. 

             A word about the actor: Since watching Once Upon A Time, Robert Carlyle has become one of my new favorite actors. He is such a good actor, you may forget that Rumpelstiltskin is an actor in make up. Not to mention that his Scottish accent just makes him more awesome! Who doesn't love a man with a Scottish accent? I hope to meet Robert Carlyle someday.

           Rumpelstiltskin, the Dark One, or simply Mr. Gold. All contain the man or beast inside. Driven by power and/or love. Whatever the reason, we can count on him for entertainment.
