Roles In A Prophecy: Willow

Let's face it: The 70's and 80's were good years for the fantasy genre, and also for George Lucas. Apart from Star Wars, we also have another of Lucas's classics, Willow. This story is something else because even though the story is supposed to be revolving around the one in the prophecy, it wouldn't have come true without our hero, Willow.

Isn't she cute?!
Once upon a time, a prophecy is foretold of a child who will bring about the downfall of the evil Queen Bavmorda. In an attempt to prevent this Bavmorda captures all the pregnant women in her realm. Eventually, a baby girl named Elora Danan is born with the mark of the prophecy. The nursemaid of the baby's mother manages to sneak out of Bavmorda's castle. They are hunted down and the nursemaid is killed, but she is able to get the baby out of harm's way in time. The baby comes to a village of dwarves called Nelwins, where she is found by Willow Ufgood, a budding magician, along with his family. Upon bringing the baby to the village council, their leader High Aldwin senses that the child is special. As Willow sets out to return Elora Danan to the humans, he will end up on an adventure that will put the child's and his village's life in his hands, and his sorcery skills to the test.

As I said earlier, the prophecy wouldn't have come true without Willow. Even if Elora hadn't been born, Bavmorda would have continued to rule. Mind you, the prophecy didn't say that Elora would destroy Bavmorda herself, but that she would bring about Bavmorda's downfall. Therefore, Elora and Willow are equally important.

When we think about it, one of the themes in this film is the concept of little people doing big things. You don't have to be tall to be a wizard, and that applies to Willow. Another theme is simply confidence. Throughout the film, Willow continuously finds the courage to do whatever is necessary to protect Elora. However, he has difficulty having faith in himself. This can be seen when Willow has to return the sorceress Fin Razel to her human form. But after a few failed attempts and the stakes being higher than ever, he succeeds.

With a companion like Madmartigan, Willow ran into a few more troubles, such as when Madmartigan briefly betrayed them only to be captured himself. But in the end, Madmartigan always helped Willow get out of the situation, and became good friends. But it's true, Willow couldn't have faced some of the things he did by himself.
