Let's face it: The 70's and 80's were good years for the fantasy genre, and also for George Lucas. Apart from Star Wars, we also have another of Lucas's classics, Willow. This story is something else because even though the story is supposed to be revolving around the one in the prophecy, it wouldn't have come true without our hero, Willow.
Isn't she cute?! |
As I said earlier, the prophecy wouldn't have come true without Willow. Even if Elora hadn't been born, Bavmorda would have continued to rule. Mind you, the prophecy didn't say that Elora would destroy Bavmorda herself, but that she would bring about Bavmorda's downfall. Therefore, Elora and Willow are equally important.
When we think about it, one of the themes in this film is the concept of little people doing big things. You don't have to be tall to be a wizard, and that applies to Willow. Another theme is simply confidence. Throughout the film, Willow continuously finds the courage to do whatever is necessary to protect Elora. However, he has difficulty having faith in himself. This can be seen when Willow has to return the sorceress Fin Razel to her human form. But after a few failed attempts and the stakes being higher than ever, he succeeds.
A word concerning obstacles: Would it have been better for Willow to complete his journey alone? With a companion like Madmartigan, Willow ran into a few more troubles, such as when Madmartigan briefly betrayed them only to be captured himself. But in the end, Madmartigan always helped Willow get out of the situation, and became good friends. But it's true, Willow couldn't have faced some of the things he did by himself.
